Mocimboa da Praia rehabilitation project stalls due to non-payment of workers

The Mocimboa da Praia house rehabilitation project, funded by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), has been stalled for three months due to non-payment of workers' salaries. The project, launched as a hope for hundreds of families displaced by the insurgent conflict, aimed to rebuild infrastructure as part of efforts to restore normality in the region.

Initially, the work progressed rapidly, with walls being erected, roofs installed, and the first plastering works showing signs of recovery. However, the suspension of payments led to a complete halt in the works. On the ground, the scene is one of abandonment: unfinished houses, fragile structures, deteriorated materials, and a general atmosphere of frustration among beneficiaries and workers.

According to Mozanorte, the affected workers have already filed a complaint with the local police command, demanding answers and accountability, but there has been no response. (Armando António)
