Young people in the district of Mecanhelas, in the northern province of Niassa, are calling for the Local Economic Development Fund (FDEL) to be managed in an inclusive manner, ensuring that state resources do not benefit only one political group.
The appeal was made to the District Administrator, José Abibo Iassine, during a meeting held on Thursday (16th) with young entrepreneurs, including motorcycle taxi drivers and music artists.
Drawing from past experiences with similar funds and other government opportunities which, according to the participants, were often distributed based on political affiliations — the youth urged the official to ensure that FDEL is managed transparently and inclusively, focusing on fighting youth unemployment and promoting collective well-being.
According to the speakers, the politicization of government funds and initiatives creates an atmosphere of discontent, apathy, and hatred among citizens.
In response, the administrator encouraged the youth to participate in the FDEL funding competition. José Abibo reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring transparency in the project selection process, emphasizing that the funds are not “mahala” (free handouts). He clarified that recipients must be credible individuals capable of creating jobs and repaying the funds. (Jaime Paculeque)
