Update on the Nairoto Attack in Montepuez district

This October, the district of Montepuez, in Cabo Delgado province, northern Mozambique, has been the scene of terrorist activity. Earlier this week, the administrative post of Nairoto, located within the district, was attacked. A mining company that has been operating in the area for several years was directly affected and plays an important role in the local economy.

According to an anonymous source from the Defence and Security Forces stationed in the region, the area has remained in total silence since the attack, due to the mass exodus of the population. Some residents who were unable to flee have been sleeping in the bush, waiting for the situation to return to normal.

Following the attack, ten agents from the Rapid Intervention Unit (UIR) were reported missing. In addition, many assets belonging to the mining company were set on fire, and all workers were evacuated from the site for safety reasons.

Out of the ten missing agents, four have returned, while the whereabouts of the remaining six remain unknown. The Defence and Security Forces are still on the ground, working to restore control in the area. (BP)
