A silent humanitarian crisis is unfolding across the villages of Nipepe district, in Mozambique’s Niassa province, where more than 4,000 residents struggle daily with hunger.
Families in Nipepe-sede, Meluco, Cheia-Cheia, Manlia, Tamica, Mutumar, Natil, Vessa, and Nampaua are living a nightmare that worsens with each passing day.
The cause of this tragedy? The trail of destruction left by Cyclone Jude, which in March devastated entire plantations, leaving the land barren and stomachs empty. Crops that once sustained these communities – maize, beans, sesame, sorghum, sugarcane, bananas, and pumpkins were virtually wiped out, according to the district administrator, Amílcar Juaniha.
What was once hope for a promising harvest has turned into disappointment and despair, with children, the elderly, and pregnant women among the most vulnerable. (Mozanorte)
