Pollution caused by Cement Factory in Niassa raises concern among authorities

The Government of Niassa Province has expressed serious concern over the environmental and public health impacts caused by the Niassa Cement Factory, located in the Chimbonila district.

The industrial unit, built with Chinese investment, has the capacity to produce 200,000 tons of cement and 156,000 tons of clinker a key component in cement production annually, employing around 220 workers, including 20 Chinese technicians.

During a visit to the factory on Tuesday (October 7), the Secretary of State in Niassa Province, Silva Livone, warned of the severe environmental pollution generated by the factory’s operations, describing it as a significant threat to public health and the region’s environmental balance.

According to Livone, it is urgent to adopt concrete and sustainable measures to mitigate the harmful effects of industrial activity, ensuring that economic growth does not come at the expense of local communities’ well-being and environmental degradation.

The official called for stronger environmental control mechanisms and the implementation of cleaner technologies that allow for industrial development to go hand in hand with environmental preservation.

“Economic growth is only truly sustainable when it respects the principles of environmental responsibility and the well-being of the population,” he stated. (Jaime Paculeque)
