Storm in Lago Niassa: Fisherman still missing

A fisherman from the locality of Messumba, in Lago district, Niassa province, has been missing since Saturday (October 4th) after being caught in a violent storm on Lake Niassa.

The victim, David João Ncondola, reportedly left home around 6 a.m. to fish for ncheni, a species locally known as Machimbo. According to local sources, the small canoe he was using could not withstand the severe weather. It was later found without fishing gear in the community of Chia. His life jacket was discovered in Mbamba.

Family members said they launched a search after realizing he had not returned home. “We found the life jacket at night and later came across the canoe, but he was nowhere to be found,” said a cousin who asked not to be named.

Search efforts are still underway, involving community members, local fishermen, and maritime authorities. However, poor weather conditions on the lake continue to hamper the operation. (Mozanorte)
