Mussa Bim Bique University (UMBIQUE), in Nampula Province, issued an urgent appeal on Tuesday morning (18 November 2025) urging students to report cases of sexual harassment involving lecturers and alleged grade-for-sex exchanges.
This comes at a time when the atmosphere within the institution is tense and increasingly worrying, following reports that surfaced days ago about alleged harassment of students by lecturers.
In recent weeks, the university has faced intense exposure on social media and in the press after allegations emerged claiming that some lecturers were allegedly demanding sexual relations in exchange for improved grades in the subjects they teach.
The seriousness of these revelations has created an environment of constant threat, especially for female students who fear retaliation if they come forward.
Confronted with the surge in anonymous allegations, the university’s leadership convened an emergency meeting involving students and lecturers in an effort to halt the rise of a phenomenon that threatens to irreversibly damage the institution’s credibility.
During the meeting, the university’s highest governing body strongly condemned any form of sexual harassment and assured that strict measures would be enforced.
The vice-rector revealed that a special committee has been set up to investigate all reports: “It was created to look into the anonymous allegations and hold those responsible accountable,” he said.
“There are women on the team to welcome and support the students who are victims of these practices. We want victims to feel safe when reporting,” he added.
The university’s top authority stressed that protection for students will be guaranteed, but urged that reports be made responsibly and, whenever possible, accompanied by evidence.
“We need evidence to resolve this issue that undermines the good name of the institution. We are working to clarify these allegations and rely on everyone’s cooperation,” he emphasized. (Mozanorte)
