Armed men had established themselves on Nhonje Island in Mocímboa da Praia

Nhonje is an island in the district of Mocímboa da Praia, in Cabo Delgado province, where fishermen from other districts and from the neighbouring province of Nampula carried out their fishing activities.

On the night of 26 November 2025, the insurgents entered and set up on the island. The few fishermen who were there abandoned the area, and neighbouring villages such as Ulo, Nabagi, Naquidunga, among others, spent the night without sleeping. Some people even spent the night in the mangroves.

The defence and security forces tried to approach the island that same night, but were unable to enter it. From the morning of the 27th until around 9 a.m., gunfire could be heard, and two helicopters were flying over the area, dropping explosives on the insurgents.

In the village of Ulo, which is the closest to the island, many people got up very early and headed to the district headquarters village. An anonymous source who spoke to us from Ulo said the area is tense due to the presence of the insurgents.

It is not the first time the region has suffered terrorist attacks, but the population continues to live in those villages because they are their places of origin and, due to lack of means, they are unable to get land or housing in safer areas, such as the town of Mocímboa, Pemba, Montepuez, or other localities in the province or the country.

According to information about the attack on Nhonje Island, the number of insurgents appears to be high, as the military forces were unable to enter and take control of the situation. The two helicopters attempted to intervene, but so far there is no updated information regarding the outcome after the intense air operations on the island.

Even so, the defence and security forces remain on the ground, trying to bring the situation under control. (Mozanorte)
