School materials flood the markets in the city of Nacala-Porto

From the first week of January 2026, there has been a significant increase in the demand for school materials such as uniforms, notebooks, pens, pencils, folders, and other items used by students during classes.

In all markets across the city of Nacala-Porto, as well as in its neighborhoods, traders are investing heavily in the sale of school supplies due to the high demand during this period. Tailors are also extremely busy, working day and night, as fabrics for school uniforms continue to pile up in their workplaces.

Some tailors operate in the busiest areas, such as markets, especially where second-hand clothes, popularly known as “quem paga”, are sold. However, in recent days, many have chosen to work from their homes in order to continue sewing at night and reduce the workload.

Prices of school materials vary depending on the type of product and the seller. Among all markets in the city, customers including students and parents or guardians — mostly prefer the busiest ones, particularly Juma Market and Cidade Alta Market.

At schools, there is also noticeable movement. Some students who have not yet managed to enroll go early every morning to school premises in hopes of achieving their goal. In some schools, however, enrollment has already closed, and only other administrative matters are being handled while awaiting the official opening of the school year. (BP)
