SERNIC rescues six teenagers allegedly victims of human trafficking in Nampula

The National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) in Nampula has rescued six teenagers who were travelling from Nampula province to the city of Beira, in Sofala province, after allegedly being lured with false promises of employment in the fishing sector.

According to authorities, the minors are from Eráti district and were reportedly recruited through phone calls made by unidentified individuals. Investigators believe the case may be linked to a human trafficking network.

SERNIC spokesperson in Nampula, Suelete Bernardo Mocímboa, stated that the teenagers left their homes without informing their families, a situation that raised suspicions and prompted authorities to intervene.

“There are strong indications of human trafficking, especially because the minors travelled without the knowledge of their guardians,” she explained.

As part of the ongoing investigation, SERNIC says it has already identified two suspects allegedly connected to the scheme. One of them is believed to be in Liúpo district, Nampula province, while the other is reportedly in the city of Beira. Authorities say efforts are underway to apprehend those involved.

Meanwhile, SERNIC has urged parents and guardians to remain vigilant regarding job offers directed at teenagers, particularly those made through phone calls and social media platforms [Mozanorte].
