The worsening of fainting cases at Mecanhelas-Sede Basic School, in Niassa province, is causing concern among students, who are demanding answers and urgent measures to address the situation.
On Monday, October 26, 2026, the unrest culminated in moments of tension, resulting in damage to windows and other school materials, and requiring the intervention of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) to restore order.
According to the students, more than ten students suffered fainting spells last Monday, while the previous week, the number of cases reportedly reached around 30, worsening the climate of concern at the educational institution.
Faced with the situation, students gathered to demand explanations regarding the causes of the fainting spells and urgent measures to protect the school community. The expression of discontent escalated into acts of vandalism, with the destruction of windows and other school property.
The intervention of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique prevented the moments of tension from worsening, helping to calm tempers at the scene.
On the occasion, the district PRM commander in Mecanhelas, Ndala Jafar, appealed for calm and serenity from the students, parents, and guardians, urging them to avoid behaviors that could compromise public order.
The police official also called on the school community to await clarifications from the competent authorities regarding the fainting cases, rather than resorting to acts that could endanger people's safety and the preservation of school property.
To date, no information has been provided regarding the causes of
the fainting spells, and clarification from the competent authorities is
necessary to determine the origin of the phenomenon and the appropriate
measures to protect the students' health. (Ma Mataka)
