Nampula: The population of Km3, in the Johar neighborhood in Angoche, struggles to access potable water

População de km3 em Angoche espera longas horas para ter acesso agua potável

Km3 is the distance to the center of the city of Angoche, a district located south of the Nampula province in northern Mozambique. Certainly, the population of that neighborhood feels excluded from the decisions of the municipal government of the city.

According to our report, most of the residents of that neighborhood who were present at the site say they endure endless suffering since the water sometimes comes intermittently.

“It’s very embarrassing for the residents; we even drink this water because we have no alternatives, and we use it for all purposes.”

“If it weren’t for the economic agent, a son of this household, who feels pity for his relatives, we don’t know how we would live without water,” highlighted residents who struggle to get water.

Still, these residents say that the government entities are not doing anything to provide a water source for the neighborhood. "Even the local authorities, in this case, the secretary, know about the situation, but they don’t report it in the meetings and encounters they have with higher-level government officials."

As a way to alleviate the suffering of this population, an economic agent named Ali Momade took the initiative to create a water borehole for the residents of the neighborhood, but it is still unclear whether this water is safe for consumption since the relevant authorities have not conducted any inspections.

In other neighborhoods, people resort to traditional wells, amid the enormous suffering they face to access water, even though the alternative of a borehole created by an economic agent is the only one available for now. However, it is not an officially recognized borehole by the government.

In a telephone conversation, the economic agent stated that he created the borehole to supply the population due to the suffering they face in obtaining the precious liquid.

Ali Momade acknowledged that the water comes intermittently due to the depth of the borehole, but also because it is pumped by a motorized pump that requires electricity to function and supply water to the population.

Issufo Momade Lambone, the councilor for religious affairs and community engagement in the Angoche municipality, said in an interview that if the population needs water, they should send a letter to the municipality of Angoche.

His office will follow up on the case. Lambone mentioned that if the issue is not resolved due to the many activities the municipality needs to address in various parts of the city, he asked the population of Km3 to remain calm and patient, reassuring them that the problem will be addressed once the letter is submitted.

It is important to note that the municipality of Angoche has been under the management of FRELIMO since the last municipal elections in 2023. (LL)
