Tropical
cyclone "Chido" has caused 120 deaths, 868 injuries, and a total of
687,630 affected people, according to the latest report. The situation is
particularly severe in the district of Mecúfi, in the province of Cabo Delgado,
where the cyclone made landfall on December 15, with winds exceeding 200 km/h,
heavy rainfall, and severe thunderstorms.
The agricultural sector also
suffered significant impacts, with 116.5 hectares affected, compromising the
livelihoods of several families who depend on agriculture as their main source
of income.
The humanitarian response is
ongoing. The National Institute for Disaster Management (INGD) has two
accommodation centers open, currently housing 1,349 people. These facilities
have been crucial in providing shelter and immediate assistance to victims who
lost their homes. According to the data, the cyclone completely destroyed
118,605 homes and left another 36,927 partially damaged.
INGD calls for national and
international solidarity to help mitigate the effects of this disaster,
emphasizing that the reconstruction challenge will be prolonged and will
require joint efforts from various sectors of society. (INGD Press Release)
