Malawian thief dies in the hands of mozambican police and malawians set fire to police and customs vehicles at the border in Mecanhelas

A citizen of Malawian nationality, allegedly accused of theft, lost his life in the cells of Mecanhelas Police Headquarter, in the southwest of the Niassa province, northern of Mozambique.

According to our sources, this young man was known as a thief and used to break into houses, stealing people's belongings in both countries

"If he stole in this country, he would seek refuge in Malawi to escape the anger of the people. He would then sell the stolen goods. In the last case, he broke into a shop belonging to a citizen of Mecanhelas but, when discovered, he fled back to his homeland, Malawi," they said to Mozanorte.

The Mozambican police, in collaboration with the Malawian police, had been tracking the young man until he was captured with the help of Malawian forces. According to police protocol, he was handed over to the Mozambican authorities for further procedures. However, during the investigation, he did not resist due to dizziness caused by the police action, and he ended up dying.

After the incident, the Mozambican team transferred the body to the Malawian police headquarters in order to locate the deceased's family. However, when they arrived, they found the local population furious over the incident, and they, armed with various blunt objects, set fire to the two aforementioned vehicles.

"We are protesting against the behavior of the Mozambicans, who kill without just cause. They do not follow the laws set out in the constitution, they only use force. Since they killed our son, brother, and family member, we will also return the favor. They fled, and that is why we burned their vehicles," said the Malawians.

So far, the police have refused to speak to the media, claiming that only the province has the right to provide information to the press. (Ma Mataka)
