The
decision to deactivate the shelter center for the families affected by the
storm on December 31 was made shortly after the visit of the president of INGD
to the Lago district last week.
A
total of 27 families, who were victims of the storm, had been accommodated at
the shelter located at the Sanjala Primary School in the village of Metangula,
Lago district, in Niassa province, in northern of Mozambique after the visit of
Luísa Meque, the general director of INGD. The families received support kits
and returned to their homes.
Víctor
Salimo, the INGD delegate in the Lago district, stated that the families
received support kits, which included food products and construction materials,
such as tarpaulins, hammers, nails, saws, and other tools "When the visit
took place, we had a meeting, where it was decided to distribute work tools and
food products, so the families could return to their homes and start
rebuilding," said Víctor Salimo.
Families
with homes built from local materials have already covered their houses, but
families whose homes were covered with metal sheets are still facing financial
difficulties in acquiring materials. Some of them had to take on debts with
loan sharks and merchants to repair their houses.
Flora
Gonçalves, one of the victims who had to live in a church for two weeks, is one
of those who had to go into debt. "I couldn’t stand living in a house that
isn’t mine anymore, so I preferred to get into debt to at least cover the
bedroom and living room", said Flora. (by David Muianga)
