Nampula: Disagreement interrupts compensation in Quinga administrative post

The story that challenges a company intending to implement a multimillion-dollar project took place in the Quinga region, Liúpo district, Nampula province, in northern Mozambique.

At the end of 2024, in early November, a company named Haiyu Mining, which operates with heavy sands, arrived at the Quinga administrative post. Upon arrival, the company held a meeting with the population of Quinga administrative post and the Coroama locality, where they discussed and reached an understanding.

A week later, the company began the payment for the land where it would operate. During the payment, the population expressed dissatisfaction with the offered amounts, as they considered them insufficient compared to the quality of the plants found in the areas.

The payment was made in the Coroama locality, but it had not yet been carried out in the Quinga administrative post due to ongoing protests in the country.

The queen of the Coroama locality rejected the payment for her machamba (farm) as she considered the amount too low compared to the size of the area. It is still unclear when the company will begin its operations.

On the day of the meeting, Haiyu Mining committed to helping the local population with some of the region's needs. The sands in question are located in the coastal area of Nampula province, in the Liúpo district, at the Quinga administrative post.

Local authorities have not publicly commented on the situation, as the company met with local leadership and the population before beginning any payments. Despite the complaints, people continued to accept the payments, except for the queen of the Coroama locality, who did not accept the payment.

In situations like this, authorities usually refrain from commenting, as the company holds consultations with district authorities before entering the area. However, it remains uncertain what will happen in the coming days. (BP in facts of Quinga)
