Niassa: Strong winds in the Lago displace over 1,500 people

The data became public following a multisectorial visit led by Governor Elina Judite Massengele and the Secretary of State of Niassa, Lina Maria Portugal, on December 31, 2024.

The visit was conducted within the framework of the Emergency Operations Committee (COE) to the municipal town of Metangula, in the Lago district, northern Niassa province, with the goal of assessing the damage caused by the strong winds that hit the locality. The cyclone left 3 dead, 376 families displaced, and 1,516 people affected.

"We are deeply sympathetic to the 361 families affected by this disaster, which resulted in 28 injured, 3 fatalities, and affected 1,516 people," said the Secretary of State.

"We call for calm and unity as we ensure food assistance and acquire materials to support the reconstruction of homes," declared the Secretary of State.

For her part, Governor Massengele reinforced the message: "I appeal to everyone to strengthen the security of their homes and help the most vulnerable families. We have identified temporary shelter spaces and are working tirelessly to ensure the well-being of all. Together, we will overcome this difficult time."

The Emergency Operations Committee (COE) is on standby and has already started distributing food aid and materials for reconstruction, as well as organizing temporary shelters for displaced families. So far, 17 families and a total of 91 people have been received and accommodated in the reception center.

It is important to highlight that, according to the impact assessment, 376 houses were destroyed. Of this total, 273 were partially damaged, with 148 of them being made of poor construction materials and 125 being conventional construction.

Additionally, 103 houses were completely destroyed, with 87 of them being of poor construction and 16 being conventional. There were also damages recorded to 21 power poles. (Ma Mataka)
