The health sector in Cabo Delgado, northern of Mozambique is on high alert due to the outbreak of the Marburg virus, which was identified at the end of last month in Tanzania.
This
highly contagious disease has raised concerns among health authorities,
particularly due to the complexity of its clinical symptoms, which include
severe symptoms such as fever, headache, intense malaise, joint pain, diarrhea,
and vomiting with blood.
In
response to the threat, the provincial chief medical officer, Edson Fernando,
announced the establishment of sentinel posts in districts bordering Tanzania,
as well as at ports and airports. These measures are aimed at monitoring and
controlling the possible spread of the virus into the national territory.
Despite
the precautions taken, many residents of cities like Pemba, the provincial
capital, are still unfamiliar with the disease.
According
to health experts, the Marburg virus is not well known locally, which has made
raising awareness about its severity and prevention methods difficult.
To
address this knowledge gap, the health sector is promoting lectures and
educational campaigns in districts near Tanzania, with the goal of expanding
information about the disease and its prevention methods.
Authorities
are urging the population to remain vigilant and follow prevention guidelines
to prevent the spread of the virus in Cabo Delgado. (Seven Mussa)
