Niassa: Metangula population mobilized to contribute for the removal of the baobab tree with bees at Mechumua Primary School

Amisse Árabe, President of the Metangula Municipal Assembly, visited the Mechumua neighborhood in the northern part of the Municipality of Metangula, Niassa Province, northern Mozambique, where last Friday, he led the opening ceremony of the academic year. He mobilized the local population to contribute financially for the removal of the baobab tree, which contains bees, from the primary school.

The initiative follows an incident that occurred last August, in which the bees residing in the baobab tree located on the school grounds attacked those present at the school and in nearby residences. This resulted in 6 victims, including students and school staff, and in one of the neighboring houses, 120 pigeons died from bee stings.

The solution found was to remove the baobab tree, and this work comes with its costs. In this regard, Amisse Árabe, President of the Municipal Assembly, stated that the solution should be local. Therefore, he mobilized the community to contribute towards paying the people who will carry out the tree removal work. Amisse was the first to contribute 2,000 meticais, followed by the Chief of Planning in the district education service, Alexandre Sicumbili, who donated 1,000 meticais.

Some attendees at the event also contributed, raising a total of 3,770 meticais. This amount was handed over to the community queen, who, along with the neighborhood secretaries, will continue collecting contributions and later hire people to carry out the removal of the baobab tree, considered a "bee breeding ground."
