The cause of Terrorism in Cabo Delgado is Gas – declared the president to the population of Palma

The new government of Mozambique has no doubts about the terrorism that plagues the northern part of the country, particularly in Cabo Delgado.

Residents of Palma, as well as from Mueda, Nangade, and Mocímboa da Praia, who participated in a public rally on February 26, led by the Head of State, Daniel Francisco Chapo, were informed that the cause of terrorism is gas.

“We know very well that when the terrorists first arrived here in Palma, they said it was due to unemployment, that it was the young people of Palma doing the terrorism. We said that is not true, because in Pemba, Beira, Tete, Niassa, Nampula, there is also unemployment, but why is there no terrorism there?” he began questioning.

Then, Daniel Francisco Chapo declared, “It is because of our gas, not because of unemployment. You cannot accuse our youth. Our youth in Palma are not Al-Shabaab. Al-Shabaab are criminals, they are enemies of the people,” he stated.

The president's statement helps reduce the doubts about the causes of terrorism, although academics and researchers have identified other factors, including religious ones.

The terrorist attacks began on October 5, 2017, initially in the village of Micimboa da Praia and the locality of Oasse, and later spread to other districts in Cabo Delgado and partially to Nampula and Niassa. (Mozanorte
