Liúpo Literacy Instructors tearfully protest delayed salary payments

On March 17, 2025, at the Quinga administrative post in the Liúpo district, Nampula province, northern Mozambique, a meeting was held between the literacy instructors and the director of the Quinga Primary School to organize documents and prepare for the upcoming start of classes.

During the meeting, the literacy instructors expressed their difficulties, particularly concerning the previous year. Throughout the entire previous year, they did not receive their salaries until they reached the district education office to understand what was happening and the reasons behind the delay in payment.

In the meeting, the instructors showed challenges in organizing their documents to submit the ZIP for the school, as they did not want to continue teaching before receiving their overdue salaries from the previous year.

However, the school administration convinced the instructors to proceed with the lessons, assuring them that both the previous year's and this year's salaries would be paid. They are now organizing their documents to submit to the school administration and later forward them to the Liúpo district education office.

This year, the payment of literacy instructors' salaries at the Quinga administrative post will be different from previous years. In past years, the contract was quarterly, but this year payments will be made monthly, and each month will include two salary payments, including the one from the previous year.

Initially, the literacy instructors did not want to continue teaching, but they reluctantly agreed, hoping to receive their overdue salaries. The director promised that such a situation would not happen again this year. (BP)
