Balama: Graphite Company and landowners nearing an understanding

On Friday, the 18th of the current year, former workers, farmers, and the local leadership gathered to discuss the ongoing conflict between the company Twigg and the farmers whose machambas (small farms) were occupied by the graphite-exploring company.

According to the District Administrator of Balama, in the south of Cabo Delgado, Edson Lino, the meeting aimed to put an end to the problems that have been ongoing for months.

"We have our farmers here who signed [the agreement], and we are very pleased that they are honoring their part," he began by explaining.

The company also signed, and starting Monday, the 21st of this month, we will begin the process so that by May 12, 2025, it will be possible to start working," said the Administrator.

Ali Antonio, one of the beneficiaries, stated that they are satisfied with the agreement reached between the protesters and the company, and that payments will begin in May 2025.

Another beneficiary, Roberto Amimo, a resident of Pirira village near the town of Balama, added that there should be no further strikes or problems, as the company has already committed to make payments in May.

According to reports, compensation will be processed based on the area each person owns, with 120,000 meticais to be paid per hectare. (Fadila Buruhane)
