Fuel price speculation at Total Station in Chiúre

After Cyclone Jude, the town of Chiúre entered a fuel crisis due to the cut-off of the national road connecting the provinces of Nampula and Cabo Delgado. As a result, the price of gasoline in this district reached up to 200 meticais when sold by street vendors.

After three weeks, the Total fuel station began supplying fuel again, but this time at prices different from those set by law. The managers of this facility are taking advantage of the population’s hardship in this district.

Gasoline, which is listed at 85.89 meticais on the national price table, is being sold for 100 meticais at the Total station in Chiúre. This drastic price increase seen only in Chiúre has led to complaints from local residents. This price was still in effect as of 3 p.m. on Friday. However, there has been no response from the authorities.

Diesel, which costs 89 meticais nationally, is being sold for 105 meticais at the Total station in Chiúre, putting additional strain on diesel vehicle owners.

It is known that a detour has already been made at the Monapo river and vehicles are now able to pass through, yet the fuel station continues to maintain prices above the national rate.

Several residents have spoken out, calling on the appropriate authorities to intervene, as this situation constitutes a violation of consumer rights and also drives up the cost of food and passenger transport. (Reported by Celestino Carlos)
