The population of Majune District, in northern
Niassa, Mozambique, is demanding that the government improve living conditions,
particularly in the areas of education, water supply, and electricity.
This demand was presented to Members of the
Provincial Assembly during their visit on April 9th to the district,
specifically to the Administrative Post of Muaquia, in the locality of Riate.
The local population is calling for better school
infrastructure and the introduction of secondary education levels, as well as
an increase in water boreholes such as in the village of Nambomo, which,
despite having hundreds of inhabitants, has only one water source located at
the local school. They are also requesting the electrification of the village
through connection to the national power grid. It was revealed during the
meeting that electrification works in the community have been halted.
The demands from the people of Riate also include
the resumption of subsidy payments to community leaders and the allocation of
transportation means to ease the work of traditional authorities.
In response to the concerns raised, the Members
of the Provincial Assembly stated that "The President of the Republic is
making efforts to solve the problems affecting the population."
On the occasion, the delegation also recommended
adherence to waterborne disease prevention measures. (Jaime Paculeque)
