Tomorrow, Sunday, the use of
canoes and boats will likely be necessary to ensure passage between Nampula and
Cabo Delgado.
Today, around 3:30 PM, the situation
on the Monapo River took a sudden turn, completely halting the passage of
vehicles and pedestrians. The flooding, which occurred without prior warning,
surprised the local population.
The first signs emerged
yesterday at 11:00 AM when intense and continuous rain for two hours caused
water from small streams to flow into the Monapo River.
The water level began to rise
gradually, still allowing people and vehicles to cross. However, the situation
changed drastically today as the water unexpectedly surged and submerged the
constructed diversion.
The current situation is
critical, and local authorities have already informed the relevant provincial
entities. Representatives from these authorities were on-site to assess the
situation and warn residents in nearby areas about the risks of crossing the
river without proper safety measures.
The entire team that worked on
constructing the diversion, along with the boats, has retreated to their areas
of origin, as the provincial governor had already inaugurated the
infrastructure.
So far, San Oil, the company
that owns the diversion, has not issued an official statement, but a
representative was at the scene monitoring the situation.
They are waiting until tomorrow
morning to see if the water level continues to rise, in order to define other
strategies to ensure the population can cross to the other bank.
Today marks the fourth day
since the governor inaugurated the diversion, which aimed to facilitate the
movement of people and vehicles.
With water covering the diversion,
the condition of the culverts remains unknown.
Mozanorte will remain vigilant
in informing its readers about the developments of this situation. (BP)
