The Integrated Support Office for Victims of Violence
(GAIVV) at the Nampula Central Hospital, in northern Mozambique, recorded over 1,800 cases of Gender-Based Violence (GBV)
throughout 2024, some of which tragically resulted in death.
According to clinical and
counseling psychologist Zunura Zubaire,
who disclosed the data on Wednesday (21 May), two of the recorded cases were confirmed as
femicides, highlighting the growing severity of domestic
violence in the region.
“When it comes to femicide,
the number may seem small, but we are receiving many cases of severe domestic
violence,” Zubaire explained, stressing that femicide is the most extreme form
of physical violence.
Zubaire noted that, in most cases, victims endure prolonged periods of abuse before the situation escalates fatally “If a victim experiences repeated episodes of domestic violence, it can ultimately lead to femicide,” she warned.
To prevent such tragedies, the psychologist encourages
women to report abuse as early as possible “Some women feel trapped and unable
to report violence due to emotional or financial dependency. When they seek
help, we offer psychological support, evaluations, and emotional care,” Zubaire
stated during a roundtable held in Nampula City earlier this week. MOZANORTE
