In Nampula, the Institute
of Legal Aid and Sponsorship (IPAJ) recorded a total of 4,232 cases of domestic violence in 2024, according to Irene Cabral, the
gender focal point at the institution.
Cabral pointed out that femicide
is still not classified as a specific crime in the Penal Code and is often prosecuted under the category of aggravated homicide,
which carries prison sentences ranging from 20
to 24 years.
“It’s a crime that is growing at an alarming rate in our society. We are losing students, mothers, working women. Society is crying out for help. Femicide needs to be legally recognized as a specific crime in order to ensure severe and appropriate punishment,” she emphasized on Thursday in Nampula city.
The remarks were made during a roundtable
discussion organized by the Faculty of Education and Communication at Lúrio
University, an event aimed at exploring the root causes of Gender-Based Violence
(GBV) and identifying strategies for its prevention. Mozanorte
