Statements made by the
Provincial Commander of the Mozambican Police (PRM), Assane Fakir, regarding the control
of the terrorism situation in Cabo Delgado have been met with skepticism and indignation by many
citizens of Pemba, who described the remarks as a “blatant lie.”
During a wreath-laying
ceremony held on Saturday,
May 17,
2025, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the PRM, Commander Fakir declared that “the
terrorism situation in the province is considered relatively calm and under
control,” while also acknowledging ongoing insurgent attacks in several
districts, including Mocímboa da Praia, Macomia, Muidumbe, Meluco, Quissanga, Ibo, Ancuabe,
Metuge, Mecúfi, Nangade,
and Montepuez.
“How can it be under control
if there are still attacks, displacements, and deaths? That’s an insult to our
intelligence,” said a resident of Natite neighborhood, who requested anonymity out of fear
of reprisals.
On social media and in the streets of Pemba, the Commander’s remarks sparked a wave of criticism,
especially from those with displaced family members or who continue to live under constant threat
due to the insurgency.
“It’s easy to claim things
are calm from behind a desk. Try spending a few days in Macomia or Muidumbe to understand what calm
really means,” another local resident remarked sarcastically.
Despite official assurances,
public perception
in Pemba suggests that the conflict is far from resolved,
and that such statements only serve to deepen the mistrust between the population and
the authorities.
