A pregnant woman narrowly escaped death on Saturday morning after being attacked by a buffalo in the farming areas of the Mapudje community, Sanga District, Niassa Province.
According to reports, the incident occurred when a group of dog hunters was tracking the wild animal in the forests near the local community’s agricultural production areas. During the chase, the buffalo became disoriented while trying to flee and ran toward the inhabited zones, eventually striking the woman who was returning from the river with a bucket of water and a sieve on her head.
"Suddenly I saw a large animal in front of me, it looked like an ox, and I was terrified. I tried to take the bucket off my head to run, but moments later I was already on the ground, far from where I had been, with severe pain in my ribs," the visibly shaken victim reported.
Minutes after the attack, the hunters arrived at the scene and followed the buffalo's tracks, while other residents informed the authorities about the animal's presence in the farming area.
A multisectoral team was dispatched to the scene to assist the victim and assess the situation. Authorities urged the population to avoid provoking or chasing large animals with bladed weapons such as spears, machetes, arrows, and sharpened sticks, as this poses a serious risk to human life.
They also reinforced that, in the event of sightings of wild animals in farming areas, citizens should immediately notify the competent authorities.
It is worth recalling that last year, in the same region, another incident involving a buffalo left three hunters seriously injured after a failed attempt to kill the animal. The buffalo was later put down by a joint team from the SDAE, PRM, and a professional hunter.
Authorities reiterated their
commitment to monitoring wildlife and ensuring community safety, appealing for
residents’ active cooperation in preventing similar incidents.
