The consumption of
drugs and alcoholic beverages is becoming an increasingly alarming trend among
young people in Mozambique's Cabo Delgado province. The Provincial Office for
Drug Prevention and Combat revealed that in the first half of this year alone,
approximately 20.25 kg of cannabis sativa
were seized.
According to Fátima
Sefo, spokesperson for the office, most users are in the 15 to 40 age group, with a strong presence among
adolescents and young adults. "There is a worrying trend of normalizing
the consumption of suruma
(a local term for cannabis), especially in peripheral neighborhoods and areas
with weak community surveillance," Sefo explained.
The so-called "bocas de fumo" (clandestine drug selling and
consumption points) have proliferated across various parts of the province.
These locations are becoming risk centers for youth, contributing to an
increase in cases of violence, delinquency, and school dropout rates.
The office
spokesperson emphasized that inspection operations will continue but stressed
that the fight against drug use must be multidimensional,
involving education, social reintegration, and community vigilance. Mozanorte
