A
massive fire broke out on Wednesday night (June 19), around 10:00 p.m., at the
Chiuaula Municipal Market in the city of Lichinga, Niassa Province.
The
blaze destroyed nine stalls, leaving local vendors in shock and counting
significant losses.
According
to information gathered at the scene, initial reports on the number of affected
stalls were conflicting some claimed three, others five but reliable sources
later confirmed that a total of nine stalls were affected.
The
cause of the fire has not yet been officially determined, though it is
suspected that an electrical short circuit may have been the origin of the
flames.
“Two
of the stalls were completely consumed by the fire, reduced almost entirely to
ashes, and very little could be salvaged from the remaining ones,” a witness
told Mozanorte.
Despite
the severity of the incident, there were no reported human casualties.
Firefighters were called in and managed to extinguish the fire, but only after
significant damage had already occurred.
This
incident is another heavy blow to the city’s small-scale vendors, many of whom
rely entirely on their market activities to support their families.
Local
authorities have not yet made an official statement regarding possible support
measures or ongoing investigations. (By Ma Mataka)
