Heavy trucks damaging Lunho river bridge in Tulo locality

The bridge over the Lunho River, located in Mepoche, Lunho administrative post, in Lago district, in Niassa province is being damaged, raising serious concerns among road users.

The concrete platform of the bridge is deteriorating, exposing reinforcement bars and other structural metals. In some areas, these protruding rods pose a risk of puncturing the tires of vehicles and motorcycles crossing the bridge.

Costa and Anastância Aidão, residents of the Tulo locality, blame the damage on heavy trucks traveling to Lupiliche, where a Chinese-owned gold mining company is operating. They are calling on the authorities to intervene before the situation worsens.

“The bridge is being damaged by the large trucks going to Lupiliche. This started last year. We are asking for it to be repaired soon, because we have no alternative route to cross to the other side,” they said.

In addition to this bridge, several other road infrastructures in the district including small bridges and culverts are reported to be in a similar state of disrepair, including some that connect the district to the provincial capital, Lichinga.

Local residents urge urgent maintenance to ensure safe mobility and prevent isolation of communities in the region. (Davide Muianga)
