Human Rights: Mozambicans injured in Nacala-Porto

Brothers, fathers, acquaintances, and even advocates for the same cause, resorted to violence among themselves on the morning of July 23, 2025, resulting in serious and minor injuries in the city of Nacala-Porto. This incident marks yet another violation of human rights in Nampula province.

The violence, characterized by the use of blunt instruments such as stones, machetes, iron bars, and others, took place on one of the city's streets, specifically in front of a political delegation office.

A witness, who was also among the injured, stated that while he was sitting in that building, he suddenly saw other men begin attacking those seated there, leading to a confrontation until at least several people sustained minor and serious injuries.

The District Hospital of Nacala-Porto, through its chief medical officer Dr. Julfrique Bila, confirmed that seven people were treated at the health unit, some of whom have already been discharged. Dr. Bila stated that of the seven injured, at least two are in serious condition but remain under the care of the medical team on duty.

The Koxukhuru association in Nampula, led by social activist Gamito dos Santos, suggested in a Facebook post that the unrest in Nacala-Porto has political undertones. The post claimed that in addition to four people sustaining serious injuries, there was a worse form of human rights violation: death, indicating two fatalities.

"In Defense of his 'Mandate', Ossufo Momade sheds Blood in Nacala-Porto, there's talk of Two deaths and 4 serious injuries ," read the post from July 23.

The spokesperson for the PRM District Command, Hermenigilda Jacob, stated that the corporation condemns the incident that resulted in injuries, but does not confirm the existence of fatalities at the scene.

"The Mozambican Republic Police at the Nacala district level became aware of the presence of some men who took over the Renamo political party headquarters in Nacala, where presumed unknown men assaulted a group that was guarding the premises. The police went to the scene, encouraging no further incidents, and confirmed that there were seriously and lightly injured people, with no deaths recorded."

Several human rights defenders condemned the use of force to resolve misunderstandings among these Mozambicans, even over political issues, warning that respect for physical integrity must be observed by everyone. (AA)
