On
July 11th, three vehicles were captured along the road near Awasse village in Mocimboa da Praia district in Cabo Delgado province by
terrorists who demanded 200,000 Meticais for each vehicle to release the
drivers, passengers, and the trucks.
The
drivers were forced to call their employers, the vehicle owners, to transfer
the demanded amount. As they didn't have the full sum, some managed to transfer
100,000, others 150,000.
After
escaping with their lives, the drivers arrived in Awasse where they encountered
the Mozambican Armed Forces (FADM) and reported what had happened.
However,
instead of assisting the survivors, the armed forces re-detained them, accusing
them of collaborating with the terrorists, alleging they were responsible for
providing food and other supplies to the armed group.
One
of the drivers recognized a thick-bearded terrorist as a long-time acquaintance
who had infiltrated the group in 2017.
According
to the source, from July 11th until today, July 14th, the drivers and their
trucks remain in the custody of the armed forces, having been taken to the
district headquarters of Mocímboa da Praia for further clarification. (SA)
