Mecanhelas District to get a new health center in the coming months

The population of the Matequesso-Carronga area, in Mecanhelas District, Niassa Province, will soon benefit from improved basic healthcare with the ongoing construction of a new health facility.

The new health center is being built from scratch in the community of Mussangusse and will also serve residents of six nearby villages. Until now, these communities had to travel to the main locality or even to the district capital of Cuamba to access healthcare services.

According to local residents, the journey becomes especially difficult during the rainy season. “We will finally be relieved from the suffering of wading through water just to reach a health center,” said Chief Carronga.

The health facility will include a maternity ward, a pharmacy, and a water supply system, according to the District Administrator, José Abibo Iassine. “You asked the government for this, and now the government is responding. You will receive medicines, babies will be born here, and you will have access to clean water right here,” said the administrator.

The project is budgeted at approximately eight million meticais and is expected to be completed within four months.

However, residents stress that the health center alone is not enough to address all their challenges. The community is also calling for more water wells, access to electricity, and mobile phone network coverage. (Jaime Paculeque)
