At approximately 3:40 p.m. on September 8th, 2025, a drowning incident was reported on the access bridge to Ilha de Moçambique which connects the mainland to the insular part of the island specifically at the first turnoff on the island side.
The victim, identified as Ativo Mahando, aged 23, was a native of Ilha de Moçambique and resident of the 16 de Junho neighborhood. According to eyewitnesses, for reasons still unknown, he threw himself into the sea upon arriving at the location.
Due to rough weather conditions at the time and his inability to swim as he had been suffering from noticeable mental health issues for the past five years, he drowned and was dragged into deeper waters. His body was recovered at 4:00 p.m. on September 9th, 2025, between the territorial waters of Ilha de Moçambique and Mussuril (near Cabacita Pequena).
In response, the district government deployed a multi-sectoral team composed of members from PCLF, SENSAP, ITRANSMAR, INAMAR, SERNIC, the Health Department, and CCP. The team carried out the recovery operation and post-mortem examinations. The body was handed over to the family at around 5:30 p.m. for burial rites. The official cause of death was confirmed as mechanical asphyxia caused by drowning. (BP)
