In terms of security, the situation in Macomia district, located in the heart of Cabo Delgado, is far from calm. Today, September 11th, marks the third consecutive night that residents of the district’s main village have gone without sleep, due to ongoing unrest and numerous rumors that have been circulating since the 7th.
The situation changes significantly at night. According to our sources, there are often no visible signs of enemy movement, yet some individuals without considering the suffering of families who are spending their nights in the bush with children spread lies and rumors, sparking widespread panic. Out of fear, many flee into the bush.
There are reports of people who are now staying continuously on their farms (machambas), waiting for the situation to stabilize, particularly in the Nachone area. For example, last night, information spread suggesting that insurgents were on their way to that zone, which forced several families to seek out safer places to stay.
But the fear was not limited to the main village. In the Xinavane neighborhood, many families also spent the night in the bush. The constant spread of misinformation throughout the district is hampering the efforts of defense and security forces, who are often left unaware of what is really happening in the communities. During the day, things appear calm, but around 6 p.m., rumors start to circulate again.
One such case happened in Xinavane-B, where the local secretary was contacted by the military post and instructed to tell people to return to their homes. Some residents claim that certain individuals are treating the situation irresponsibly, spreading false information as a joke, without considering the serious consequences this causes for the community.
