Grief and dismay take hold of Ibo Island

Grief and dismay have shaken the community of Ibo District and surrounding areas following the confirmation of the tragic death of Anrane Saide, a young fisherman, on September 8, 2025, on Kiauli Island, located about 30 miles from Matemo Island and 60 miles from the district’s main village.

According to reports from family members and local sources shared on social media, Anrane Saide was fatally shot by Mozambique’s Defence and Security Forces (FDS) during an alleged maritime patrol operation. Eighteen other individuals who were with him are also said to have been shot and killed, and three sailing boats were completely destroyed. The fishermen were carrying out their usual activities at the time, with prior knowledge of the district and provincial authorities, as well as the FDS itself, which has been conducting patrols in the area for years using a vessel known as Moçambique.

The circumstances surrounding the incident remain officially unclarified. So far, the government has not provided any justification for the violent action, heightening the atmosphere of pain, fear, and outrage among coastal communities.

It is worth noting that the Kiauli Island area and its surroundings had recently been approved for the return of civilians displaced by armed conflict. The area is currently being reoccupied by civilians, mostly from the Macomia District, with the exception of the Quiterajo administrative post, which remains inaccessible.

The funeral of Anrane Saide was held today, September 10, on Matemo Island, in an atmosphere of deep sorrow. Family members, friends, and community members are calling for justice and accountability for those responsible, and they are urging the central government to urgently investigate what they consider to be a serious violation of human rights.
