In recent days, the situation in Cabo Delgado Province has been tense across nearly all districts of the region. Today, in Cabo Delgado in the district of Montepuez specifically in the locality of Namanhumbir, an area where a mining company operates a strong wave of unrest was reported.
The unrest prompted intervention by the Mozambican Police (PRM). During the operation, an officer shot a civilian who died at the scene, according to information provided by one of our correspondents in the region. However, there are still no clear details about what triggered the local population’s revolt.
Shortly after the incident, the residents of Namanhumbir mobilized and marched to the local police post to demand an explanation for the fatal shooting. Among the protesters were also artisanal miners who joined the action.
Before reaching the main police station, the group passed by a work post where two officers were on duty. Upon identifying them, the crowd began shouting that they were responsible for the shooting. The two officers were violently attacked, and their weapons were forcibly taken.
Members of the group then used the seized weapons to shoot the two officers, who died at the scene. The incident occurred today, October 15, 2025, at around 11 a.m. in the locality of Namanhumbir, Montepuez district.
At this time, the bodies of the officers are being prepared for transfer to their respective families in the district of Macomia. The locality of Namanhumbir remains silent and shaken by the events, as further information is awaited. (BP)
