Insurgent movements leave residents in fear in Miezi

Miezi, an administrative post in the district of Metuge, about 20 kilometers from the city of Pemba, has for several years hosted many people who fled from other districts of Cabo Delgado province such as Palma, Mocímboa da Praia, Muidumbe, Nangade, Macomia, and Quissanga following insurgent attacks.

Some of these displaced people have since returned to their places of origin, while others have settled permanently in Miezi. In the early years of the insurgency in the province, the post was considered one of the safest areas. However, over time, the situation has changed, and Miezi has become both a target and a transit route for insurgents heading toward the district of Memba, in the neighboring province of Nampula.

On the morning of the 8th, insurgents were spotted in the farming fields of Miezi, causing panic and fear among residents. The news quickly spread throughout the region, also giving rise to rumors that more than twenty people had been kidnapped and were being released upon payment of ransom.

According to local sources in the Miezi administrative post, the atmosphere has been tense over the past two days. However, so far there have been no confirmed reports of anyone being captured by insurgents in their fields, although suspicious movements were observed on the morning of November 8, 2025.

Reports indicate that one resident, on his way to his field at around 5 a.m., saw a group of armed men. Terrified, he tried to run away but was chased and caught.

The insurgents, however, did not harm or threaten him. They reportedly told him not to be afraid, as they were merely passing through. After that, they released the man and did not harm anyone else. (BP)
