Unusual movements by terrorist groups have been reported in Memba district, in Nampula province a region bordering Cabo Delgado province. Since November 10, 2025, there has been growing unrest in the district.
The movements have been observed in villages near the Lúrio River, areas that have previously been targeted by attacks in Nampula province. From the 10th onward, many people began abandoning their homes due to the growing insecurity in the region.
On the afternoon of November 11, Mozanorte received information from individuals with relatives in the area, reporting that insurgents had been spotted in Sirissa village one of the coastal villages bordering Mecúfi district, in Cabo Delgado province.
Following this information, many residents of Sirissa chose not to sleep in their homes that night. Memba is one of the districts in Nampula that has suffered from terrorist activities in recent years. As of yesterday, military forces were patrolling the area, attempting to calm the population and regain control of the situation.
All indications suggest that it is the same group of terrorists who, three days earlier, had been seen in Miezi administrative post, in Metuge district. According to a local source, after capturing a man in Miezi, the insurgents reportedly said: “We are just passing through, don’t be afraid.”
During their presence in Sirissa village, reports indicate that the insurgents slaughtered goats and looted goods from some shops and stalls. Those with means of transport fled the village yesterday, while others remain hiding in the surrounding forests.
So far, there have been no reports of fires or deaths, but the fact remains that the insurgents continue to move through villages in Memba district. (Mozanorte)
