Traffic accidents and assault cases leave dead and injured in Pemba

A series of traffic accidents and assault incidents recorded in recent days in the neighborhoods of Mahate, Chuiba, and surrounding areas of Pemba city have resulted in deaths, serious injuries, and growing concern among residents.

At around 5:00 p.m. on January 17, 2026, a serious road traffic accident involving a motorcycle occurred in Mahate, near Juma, along the main road. According to preliminary information, the accident happened when the motorcyclist was traveling at excessive speed and attempted to overtake a vehicle, unaware that another car was approaching from the opposite direction.

The crash caused significant human and material damage. Three young men died at the scene, two of whom were brothers from the same family, while the third was a close friend.

Later that same day, at approximately 6:00 p.m., another accident involving a motorcycle fall, also linked to excessive speed, was reported in Mahate, in the city of Pemba. In this case, two victims, who were also brothers, were on their way to the hospital to deliver food to a relative. Both lost their lives on the way to the health facility, despite having initially been rescued.

Police authorities have confirmed that the first case is under investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the accident.

In addition to the traffic accidents, cases of physical assault were also reported. At around 6:00 p.m. on January 17, 2026, a young man named Saíde, who was involved in the process of becoming an EMOLA agent, was assaulted by unknown individuals. The attack occurred as he was returning home after his work activities. The victim worked at the Quatro Caminhos market in the Chuiba neighborhood and lived in the Maringanha neighborhood.

Saíde suffered serious injuries and was rushed to Pemba Provincial Hospital, where he is currently receiving medical treatment.

A similar incident occurred in the Mahate neighborhood at around 10:00 p.m. on the same day. Unknown individuals assaulted another EMOLA agent and robbed him of personal belongings, including a mobile phone and money. According to reports, the attackers followed the victim to his residence, where they hid before carrying out the attack. The suspects fled after the victim’s sister shouted for help.(Seven Mussa)
