Police Statement on deaths in Mogovolas outrages civil society organization

Following a statement by the Police of the Republic of Mozambique, Nampula Provincial Command, regarding the deaths that occurred on December 29, a local civil society organization expressed dissatisfaction, considering that the police had presented false information.

The organization reported on Monday (5) that thirty-eight (38) civilians were killed and thirteen (13) injured in the Marraca regulo, Mogovolas district, figures that differ from the six deaths announced by the authorities.

In this context, the civil society organization known as Koxukhuro, through its representative Gamito dos Santos, challenged the police explanation, stating that real data point to the deaths of eight children and eight women, including artisanal miners and traders who were carrying out mining activities at the site.

The organization also says that some of the victims came from Moma-Chalaua and other areas.

Likewise, the organization reported the destruction of material property, including 27 motorcycles, among other goods. (Gabriel Cassimo)
