Several roads are impassable or have restricted traffic following damage to bridges and rising river levels on various roads in Nampula Province, in the northern region of the country.
According to information from road authorities, these roads are either impassable or operating under limited circulation due to damage to metal bridges, erosion, and increased water levels in several rivers.
The R698 road, on the Muecate/Imala section, is impassable due to the washaway of the metal bridge over the Muecate River. Motorists are advised to use the alternative route via N1/R1156. A similar situation is reported on the R694 (Ribáuè/Lalaua), which has been cut off following the washaway of the metal bridges over the Mpuipui and Lalaua rivers. A long alternative route is available via Lalaua/Meti, connecting to the N13.
On the R703 (Nacala-a-Velha/Memba), traffic is also interrupted due to rising waters of the Nihequehe River. The alternative route is via R704/NC Covo/Gere-Gere/Tropene/Memba.
Other sections are experiencing restricted traffic. This includes the R683 (Nametil/Chalaua), affected by overtopping and damage to the metal bridge over the Muririmue River, as well as the R689 (Monapo/Quixaxe), where there is overtopping and damage to the access roads to the bridge over the Ampuesse River, including the diversion.
The N13 (Ribáuè/Malema) has restricted circulation due to erosion of the culvert embankment at kilometre 6.
Meanwhile, the R681 (Ivate/Larde) is completely impassable following the washaway of the bridge over the Maganha River, with no alternative route available at this time.
In a statement, the National Roads Administration (ANE) urged motorists to exercise maximum caution and to comply with on-site instructions, while assessments and repair works are underway to restore road accessibility. (Mozanorte)
