700 native tree seedlings planted in mecúfi to mark international day of forests



As part of the celebrations of the International Day of Forests, observed on March 21, 700 native tree seedlings were planted in Maweia village, Mecúfi District, Cabo Delgado Province. The initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to promote environmental conservation and the sustainable use of forest resources in the region.

The ceremony was led by Álvaro Floriano Gonçalves Júnior, Director of the Office of the Governor of Cabo Delgado Province, representing the Provincial Governor. The event brought together local government officials, community leaders, and residents, who actively participated in the tree-planting activity.

Speaking after the event, the official emphasized the importance of forests as a source of livelihood for communities and a driver of economic development, stressing the need for responsible and sustainable management of these resources. He also encouraged the adoption of practices that support environmental preservation and ecological balance.

On the occasion, Álvaro Gonçalves Júnior warned against the negative impacts of illegal and unregulated exploitation of forest resources, noting that deforestation and uncontrolled bushfires remain key drivers of environmental degradation in the province.

This year’s celebrations were held under the theme “Forests and Economies,” highlighting the crucial role forests play in supporting livelihoods, generating income, and promoting sustainable development. (Mozanorte)
