Cholera outbreak causes tension in Quissanga district

A case of cholera has been recorded at the Nacoba Health Center in Quissanga District, Cabo Delgado Province, involving a patient from the village of Arimba, located in the coastal area about 19 kilometers from the health facility.

The situation is causing significant concern and confusion among residents of Arimba, where suspicions and mistrust have emerged toward some local leaders. According to residents, tensions escalated when community members approached a local leader to report the presence of the disease in the village, but he denied the situation.

As a result, part of the population began to suspect the leader’s possible involvement in the spread of the disease. A resident identified as Nfalume stated that a friend of his had a child who also contracted the illness but has since recovered, which further fueled suspicions within the community.

Meanwhile, a health team, accompanied by the district health director, traveled to Arimba village to assess the situation but was expelled by the population, who appeared hostile and distrustful.

According to health authorities, six deaths linked to cholera have already been recorded, while five patients are currently receiving treatment at the Nacoba Health Center.

Health authorities have expressed concern about the progression of the situation, noting that insecurity on the ground is preventing further visits to the village due to fears of attacks against health workers. (Seven Mussa)
