Twenty-seven fake traditional healers have been expelled from the Association of Traditional Doctors of Mozambique (AMETRAMO) in Niassa Province following an inspection and accreditation operation carried out by the organization.
According to AMETRAMO, those expelled were not registered with the association and did not comply with the ethical and cultural principles governing traditional medicine. Some were also deceiving patients by making false promises of cures.
According to association officials, the main irregularities identified included:
- Lack of accreditation and registration with AMETRAMO;
- Fraudulent practices and excessive charges;
- Misuse of the name or title of a traditional healer for illicit purposes;
- Actions that damage the reputation of traditional medicine.
The AMETRAMO leadership in Niassa says it will continue carrying out inspection operations in all districts to identify and report individuals who illegally practise traditional medicine.
The association is also urging citizens to seek treatment only from accredited traditional healers and to report cases of fraud and exploitation.
“Traditional medicine is serious and helps many families. We cannot allow some individuals to use our name to deceive and harm the population,” said an association official.( By Ermelinda João)
