Niassa: Heavy rains and strong winds kill and destroy in the Lago district

E a desgraça bateu numa vila em pleno desenvolvimento

It all began around 2 a.m. this Tuesday (31), when heavy rain accompanied by strong winds hit the village of Metangula, in the Lago district of Niassa province, northern Mozambique. The event caused fatalities and destroyed several infrastructures.

This is an incident that will make the last day of 2024 memorable for a negative natural phenomenon within this community.

Preliminary data accessed by "Mozanorte" indicate that the phenomenon resulted in two (2) deaths, one child and one adolescent, due to the collapse of houses in the Seli and Thungo neighborhoods.

Several institutions have been destroyed, including both public and private buildings, as well as private residences.

Among the public infrastructure destroyed, the Lago Communitarian Radio station stands out, as its studio roof was torn off. This part of the building was completely destroyed, and the tower also collapsed.

Additionally, the Electricity of Mozambique (EDM) building, the District Service for Economic Activities (SDAE), and the District Government building, specifically the planning sector, were also affected.

Since then, the Lago district has been without electricity, and it is expected that it may take more than a day for power to be restored. (David Muianga)
