Local Voices: Cabo Delgado: Night of unrest in the town of Macomia
A great agitation generated
concern among the residents of the town in the central area of Cabo Delgado
province, in northern Mozambique, on the night of Sunday, January 26th. Nothing
was understood here. As we know, we have experienced attacks several times,
even with forces present, and the population is always in doubt, between being
at peace and at war.
It is true that Macomia
town, in Cabo Delgado province, is facing a concerning situation at the moment.
For example, the region’s Health Center had to discharge all hospitalized
patients due to the same situation. The information spread by word of mouth
until it became widespread, and we became very scared.
Amid this scenario, the
population of Macomia remained on alert until dawn, but as of now, there are no
signs of unusual movements or activities in the area.
However, in the Changane
neighborhood, around 15% of the population had to leave their homes and sleep
in the bush, a measure reflecting the climate of insecurity and an attempt to
avoid potential dangers.
This may have happened in
other neighborhoods in the town, as the alarm had sounded for all the
residents. Additionally, the weather conditions worsened in the following
hours. The rain started around 10 p.m. and has been affecting the region ever
since, with showers continuing until dawn.
The weather situation
aggravated the discomfort of the population, as many who went to hide found it
difficult to find shelter.
Despite the tense
atmosphere, the situation in Macomia is, for now, calm, with no significant
movements indicating an escalation of violence or other serious incidents. The
situation continues to be closely monitored by local authorities and the
residents of the area, who hope that conditions will improve soon. (From
