Local Voices: Nampula: False promises result in public dissatisfaction

One month before the 2024 electoral campaign, the government of the Quinga administrative post, in the Liúpo district of Nampula, northern Mozambique, promised the population that there would be electricity distribution and land allocation for public servants and some young locals and residents.

According to the authorities, this action was supposed to take place before the voting day and month, so the distribution process itself was to happen.

However, the electoral campaign passed, the voting took place, but electrification and land distribution did not happen. Some young people explained: "We had hope that we would get our land to start our lives and stop depending on our relatives. We are astonished because they took land from owners, claiming it was for young people and public servants," said one of the young people.

Quinga is an administrative post in the Liúpo district and supplies almost the entire district, as well as part of Nampula province, with fish.

It is a post that has received electricity, but the number of electrified houses is limited. With these promises, the residents were happy.

Now, the population claims this was one of the reasons that led to the total destruction of the post's infrastructure. This shows the level of frustration of the local population. (BP)
